Coming Home from Road Trip

by Alex on April 14, 2013

There’s nothing quite like a business trip to exhaust you.  There’s the driving, and the business, and the hotel with windows that don’t open, and the guys down the hall doing God knows what.

So, it was this weekend.  Drove a grand total of 17 hours in just more than a day.  It was enough to make me want to sleep for a week.

The only redeeming thing was what I got to come home to:

And, then, once I settled in, all the problems came rushing back:

If We Won Powerball

by Alex on March 26, 2013

It was announced that one person won the recent $338 Powerball drawing.

That person was not me.

However, if it were me, suffice to say that my wife and I, along with our 19-month old son, Ivan would make good use of the money.  In fact, Ivan and I sat down together and came up with what that would be:

1. Buy stuff

2. Buy more stuff

3. Move to a bigger, nicer home.

4. Buy some more stuff

5. Definitely hire a driver.

6. Sleep late (me)

7. Hire all the Sesame Street characters to come do a private show at our home (Ivan)

8. Spa day (my wife)

9. First class trip to Europe and then islands in the South Pacific (my wife and me, and Ivan, too, though he doesn’t know what Europe is just yet)

10. Never work again (all of us)

So, that’s our list.  What would you do?

Finding the American Dream

by Alex on March 17, 2013

As the Dow Jones continues to climb, unemployment rates remain stubbornly high.  So, as usual, fat cats are getting fatter and the rest of us thin cats are getting ever thinner — darn near anorexic.

What happened to the American Dream:

LAUGH AT THE BLIZZARD

by Alex on February 9, 2013

Well, Mother Nature got us again.  This time, she pulled a blanket of snow over the East Coast.  It’s pretty.  But, as we all know, after about 24-36 hours house-bound with your friends and loved ones, it’s time to get out, get some air, stretch the legs and, of course, get away from watching your loved ones put food in their mouths.

And, even though it’s fun to play in the snow, it’s only a matter of time before your feet are freezing.  So, come in out of the cold — but don’t go home!
Come laugh at this blizzard!!  Where and when you ask?  Well, let me tell you.

I have a show, tomorrow, February 10 at 8 pm at The Stand Comedy Club: (239 3rd Ave, btw 19th and 20th Streets). Tix available at:  http://thestand.laughstub.com/show.cfm?id=222642&cart

Here’s a preview of what you’ll see:

Hope to see you there.

Anything You Want To Be

by Alex on January 21, 2013

As we watched the Inauguration today, it struck me that it still is true in this country that you can be anything you want to be.  Sometimes it seems like you can’t.  Sometimes it seems like the rich get what they want and everyone else gets the shaft.  But when you watch a Black man who was born into a financially modest family and raised by a single mom, take his second Oath of Office as President of the United States, somehow it just makes it seem like, “hey, maybe our dreams are possible too.”

So congrats to the President.  And, to our son, I’ll continue to tell him to keep dreaming to be anything you want to be because anything  still is possible.

Real Comedians at Law of Atlanta

by Alex on January 7, 2013

Atlanta, THE ATL — known for, among other things, the 1996 Summer Olympics; CNN; and the Atlanta Falcons.  Now, of course, one of its biggest claims to fame may be as the backdrop/setting for The Real Housewives of Atlanta aka (NeNe Is Cashing In).

But, just when you thought the housewives had ATL all locked up for themselves, the Comedians at Law are hitting the scene. That’s right, on January 24 at 8 pm at Atlanta’s Punchline Comedy Club, the nation’s favorite troupe of lawyers-turned-comedian will take the stage and make you forget all the Housewives and their issues, if only for one night.

For information and tickets, please see: http://www.punchline.com/shows.asp?showdate=1%2F24%2F2013

And, if you want to catch the Comedians at Law elsewhere in the next month, you can see them as follows:

Jan 23 at 7:30 pm at Zanie’s Comedy Club (Nashville): http://zaniesnashville.laughstub.com/show.cfm?cart&id=217213

February 6 at 8 pm at Helium Comedy Club (Philadelphia): http://www.heliumcomedy.com/philadelphia/calendar.php?month=2&day=6&year=2013

February 10 at 8 pm at The Stand Comedy Club (New York): http://thestand.laughstub.com/show.cfm?id=222642&cart

Hope to see you at one of the shows:

Playing Ball

by Alex on January 6, 2013

Our son Ivan is just 16-months old.  He’s also one of the toughest bosses in the World.  Think Donald Trump on steroids meets Genghis Khan. He doesn’t suffer fools, he brooks no quarter, and he doesn’t chew his cabbage twice.  He is, in sum, demanding.

But, he is not unfair.  So it is that from time-to-time, Ivan aka “The Client” will share his business philosophy with the World.  Today was just such a day.  He used the occasion of playing ball in the park to create a metaphor about playing ball in life.  And, here’s what he had to say on what it means to play ball and why you should do it:

1. Playing ball means getting along with others.  If you can’t play ball, you can’t work anywhere with other people.  So, good luck being the keeper of the lamp at the lighthouse.

2. Playing ball will advance your career.  If you can’t play ball, pray that you can hear really because you’re going to be listening to others from the bottom rung and the back of the pack.

3. Playing ball requires subtlety.  If you can’t play ball, enjoy being known as “the guy without any filter.”

So, there you have it.  Now “play ball!”

Not Just Ivan’s Dad

by Alex on December 10, 2012

As the fans and readers of this page know, my wife and I have a 16-month old son named Ivan.  As they also know, my main role in life is being the foil to Ivan’s charismatic antics and the source of his material.  For more on that, you can see his weekly newsletter for parents (like me) who need remedial assistance: NEWS FROM THE CRIB

But, when I’m not being the Abbott to Ivan’s Costello, I’m also a comedian in my own right.  And, not just a comedian, a Comedian at Law – a member of an elite group of 4 lawyers who turned away from salary, benefits, respect of family and friends and leapt headlong into the world of comedy.

I know it’s sounds hard to believe, but it’s true. In addition to my own individual comedy work, I am, in actuality, a comedian who transitioned to my comedy career from my legal career and co-founded a group called Comedians at Law (www.comediansatlaw.com) which consists of 3 other lawyers-turned-comic and me.

We – the Comedians at Law – travel the country performing for packed houses of lawyers who need to relieve the stress of legal work and for their spouses and significant others who need to relieve the stress caused by being in a relationship with a lawyer.

In addition to our live performances, we also have a weekly podcast – which we call “PODCAST” (#CALPod on Twitter).  It’s been growing in popularity since we launched it, and we’re very proud of it because it combines incisive analysis of the biggest legal stories of the day but leavened with a huge dollop of humor and laughs.  We also have a great guest interview each week.  Frankly, the PODCAST is just about the funniest and most entertaining thing you’ll ever hear (at least, according to my mother).

Truth is, the PODCAST is pretty funny and fun, and most importantly it’s available FOR FREE!  So, we hope you’ll check it out.

It’s available on iTunes, where you can also spread some holiday cheer by rating the podcast (5-Stars would be extra holiday cheer!) and writing a nice review. So visit us on iTunes right now at: COMEDIANS AT LAW ON ITUNES

You can also find the podcast on Podomatic, where we’re poised to crack the top 10 of all comedy podcasts.  You can help us climb the charts by becoming a follower.  All it takes is to go to Podomatic, register, and follow: COMEDIANS AT LAW ON PODOMATIC.
