Does Justice Have a Color?

Today, the Senate voted to confirm Loretta Lynch as the first African-American female Attorney General of the United States.

It was a long time coming.  Too long.  Too long before a Black woman was nominated.  And, too long between the time Ms. Lynch was nominated and the time she was confirmed.

Why did it take such a long time?  Were there no qualified Black women available for the post before now?

Obviously, the answer to that question is a resounding “no.”  Indeed, one does not have to think to hard to remember Constance Baker Motley as but one example of a Black woman who was more than qualified to hold the post.

So, what’s been the hold-up?

Is it because Justice, which is supposed to be blind, isn’t actually color-blind?
