Multiracial Family Long Weekend

This Memorial Day Weekend, our Multiracial family was able to enjoy some good, old-fashioned, quality-time together.  In other words, our 3 year-old ran mom and dad ragged to the point where we’re almost able to say we’re looking forward to going back to work.

Although we are a Multiracial family, we are, after all, just a family, so in many ways our weekend was just like any other family’s long weekend.  Too many snacks, too much sun, not enough naps.

Still, as with all things race-related, as a Multiracial family, we did have some experiences unique to our brand of family:

1. With all that Sun exposure, it’s a lot harder to tell who’s White and who isn’t.

2. No one called my wife the nanny, because all the rich people were out of town at their beach houses

3. With NYC emptied of its residents and full of unsuspecting tourists, it was even easier than usual to convince people that we were Lenny Kravitz’s cousins.

All kidding aside, the long weekend was a great chance for our family to really spend a lot of time together and for us to bond in a way that just is not possible during the workweek and seems difficult during the usual weekend. The extra day of family time really is something special.

So, if you haven’t had a chance to spend some time with your family for awhile, I highly recommend it.  Even if there are difficulties and frictions between some family members. In the end, the family you have is the only family you have.  Enjoy them while you can.

I think its quite nice when my family can get a extra day together. I have very young children and I work as a lawyer and my husband is a engineer. My family never seem to have enough time to play together. But I have decided that I would work less hours and give my multicultural family more time.

Yes, time together is definitely hard to come by.
