Notes From a Middle-Aged Dad #32: Politics

Dear Ivan:

As you know, Mommy and Daddy have been watching what are called the “political conventions” on tv lately.  We realize they can sometimes seem boring.  Just know that they’re very important because the political parties have raised ungodly sums of money that, instead of being spent on infrastructure or education or health care or helping people out of poverty, are being spent on giant parties for egotists.  It’s sort of like that birthday party you went to for the kid who think it’s all about “me, me, me” and whose parents have so much money that the party was excessive in every respect.

However, we do realize it does seem a bit boring at times.  Just think about it as if it’s a Pixar movie like “Finding Nemo” except in this case it’s called “Finding a Viable Candidate” which is not nearly as fun or colorful, regrettably.  On the other hand, no matter their flaws, neither Nemo nor Dory will ever be responsible for the collapse of Western Civilization and the ruination of the United States. So, to that extent, this “movie” does have some importance.

As my daddy used to say to me, “one day you’ll understand.” In the meantime, just know that this stuff will be over in a couple of days and then you can go back to 24/7 Cars, Planes, Nemo, Incredibles, etc.

Love,

Daddy
