Moving Beyond Race To Understanding

My wife, son and I are a multiracial family.  She is Black.  I am White, and our son is Biracial.

What’s interesting about being a Biracial/Multiracial family in America is that in this country, it often seems as if people from Red States and Blue States can barely live together in one country, one giant landmass.

Yet, here we are, people of different colors and races living together under one roof, sleeping in the same bed. That’s right, every night a Black woman a White man, and a 3 foot tall Biracial, sleeping-on-the-horizontal (who kicks me in his sleep) sleep together.  Does that make us Dr. King’s Dream?  Maybe.  Or, maybe it just means that like so many others we’ve moved beyond race.

The great thing about moving beyond race is that it allows you to focus on much more important things like: “who didn’t clean up after themselves?” And “how come there’s dried-up Playdoh in the couch?” And “why are you laughing, that fart isn’t funny at all?” and many, many other far more important issues that help bind a family together.

So, here’s a thought for Congress — take a lesson from the multiracial families out there.  Stop focusing on how much you’re different from one another and look for the ways in which you are the same.  Honestly, it just seems that if Mitch McConnell and Nancy Pelosi could share a milkshake a then laugh over a game of “pull my finger” they’d laugh more and get more done.
